Review
for Sons of Champlin "Hip Lil' Dreams"
Classic Rock Revival 2005
How
long do you have to wait for new stuff from one of the best bands to come
out of the original San Francisco scene? No more! "Hip Li'l Dreams", is
as fun and funky as urban and urbane as the finest Sons Of Champlin, but
it's brand new! With years of experience behind his soulful voice (think
Maroon 5 meets Daryl Hall), band leader and name-sake, Bill Champlin,
can stand toe to toe with any modern R&B singer of our time. During
the Sons extended hiatus, he's been keeping in shape as a 25-year, card-carrying
member of Chicago. On "Hip Li'l Dreams", Bill Champlin is joined by Sons
alumni Geoff Palmer, Dave Schallock, James Preston and world renown trumpet
legend Mic Gillette. Rounding out the band are new guitarist Tal Morris
and Tom Saviano on sax. Special guests include the Doobie Brothers Tom
Johnston and Toto's Bobby Kimball. There's not another group in existence
that could even attempt to mix Hammond organ, horns, aggressive guitar,
and vibes the way the Sons Of Champlin do.
"Hip
Li'l Dreams", is what all Sons of Champlin fans have been waiting for,
but it's also made for a much wider audience ready for a shot of adrenaline
in their Rock and R&B. The Sons Of Champlin have survived the test
of time...one listen to "Hip Li'l Dreams", will convince you that age
does not necessarily mean mellowing. There is definitely no dust on these
guys!
